The Redentor Feast in Venice

14 July 2017

Tomorrow is a big day in Venice: it's the Redentor!
The Redentor (The Feast of the Most Holy Redeemer) is the most celebrated and one of the most popular holidays in Venice.
It is both a religious and an entertaining event at the same time thanks to the exciting and long fireworks show.

Each year the event lures in thousands of visitors to the city from all over the world: the inimitable stage of the San Marco Basin comes to life with the presence of hundreds of boats and becomes animated starting from 11.30 pm thanks to the games of lights, colors, and reflections of the fireworks that illuminate the whole city.

When is this feast born and why?

The Redeemer's Feast is a reminder of the building of the Church of the Holy Redeemer, wanted by the Republic of Venice as an ex voto for the liberation of the city from the plague of 1575-1577.

Since year 1577, the end of the pestilence is remembered each year: on the Saturday before the third Sunday of July, a temporary bridge between Giudecca island and Zattere in Venice is opened, allowing the faithful to walk to the Church of the Redeemer.

Not only faith and religion

But the Redentor is not just related to religious celebrations.

It is recalled and recalls such a large audience for the great fireworks show and for the three regattas of Sunday, featuring typical Venetian boats.

IMuranesi wanted to celebrate in its own way the Redentor with a collection of blown Murano glass lamps, enriched with colorful murrine. In these little artworks, the central glass element is surrounded by a metal cage inspired by the lanterns hung on the altane - the typical roof terraces - from the Venetians during the Redentor dinner.
